A young man moves to Los Angeles to make something of himself -- but finds that such a task might take a little more work than he thought -- in this romantic comedy. According to Spencer stars Jesse Bradford as the titular Spencer, an ad agency mail room clerk just-arrived in L.A. and eager to make his presence felt. Renting a room in a run-down mansion, Spencer crosses paths with shady eccentrics Ezra (David Krumholtz) and Feldy (Adam Goldberg), aspiring porn filmmakers who convince him to make inroads as a commercial director -- with little success. But when Spencer serendipitously meets his childhood sweetheart Melora (Mia Kirshner), who's currently stuck in a go-nowhere relationship with the smarmy Craig (Brad Rowe), things begin to look up. ~ Michael Hastings, Rovi

Very sweet movie; happy ending (love that.) I loved the flaky roommates and the wrap-up, which was very tidy, but almost too sweetsy. The roommates' ending was hilarious, and the hero's ongoing dialogue with his grandmother is touching. It bothered me that they made the female protagonist 'Melorah' (Mia Kirschner) steadily less attractive; even though I love geeky characters, I found this depiction more offensive than effective. I couldn't tell if the intent was to show that Melorah was a geek and they were reverting her in order to move her away from the chic beauty trying to 'woo' the jerky guy and back toward her 'natural' self, who the hero likes. David Krumholtz & Adam Goldberg (and their subplot were very funny and lightened an occasionally dragging plot. (Also, the mullet on Krumholtz was EPIC.)
