A nut--even two--can bring vitality to a movie, but when every character in a film has lost his or her grasp on reality, you are in, as Ms Davis once told us, for a bumpy ride. That is the problem, pure and simple, with Joe Maggio's nitwit MILK AND HONEY. What starts like gangbusters with one character off his meds, creating a difficult bedroom scene and then a beyond-embarrassing party scene, continues with the wife off her rocker, & each new character introduced proves nuttier than the next. (There is one stable soul in the film, but she resides in the hospital, comatose.) Yup, it's a crazy world we live in, but if that's Maggio's point, this is one poor way to make it. In any case, the director seems content with giving his actors red hot scenes to navigate, but plot contrivances and loony-tune characters destroy everything. This writer/director's earlier film "Virgil Bliss," with the same excellent leads, was quieter & infinitely better. Maybe he'll bounce back with number three.
