I plan to purchase this movie. Although I am a westerner with limited first hand knowledge of eastern culture, I was able to bridge the gaps in my knowledge. It is possible that my imagination created a different story than the writer and director intended, but both my wife and I found parallels to episodes in our own lives (we are in our seventies so we have had the time and the opportunity to go through alot of living. Raising orchids take a lot of work. In the end there is a reward for the grower. (I cannot speak for the orchid.) I do not fault a number of other reviews that disagree with my experience. I believe the film requires some patience and sensitivity to grasp. I almost forgot to complement and acknowledge the role of the male lead"s "school days" friend who pays the household a visit, and, I believe, rescues the family.

Have to agree this is one of the most boring movies I've ever tried to sit through. I love foreign films and can "hang with" very slow-paced, character-driven drama (The Scent of Green Papaya is one of my favorite movies of all time), but this was just beyond the pale. The acting was below mediocre, and the pace is unbearably slow. I don't think there is even music, at least not through much of it. Just not much going on here, I'm afraid. Also have to agree that Little Sister's voice is a definite negative feature!

I picked this movie out because of all the awards it won. However, I must say it was way to slow and boring and one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Incidentally, I love foreign films but this one is a loser. I kept falling alseep watching the long drawn out scenes. None of the characters was the least bit sympathetic. Don't waste your time on this movie.
