Markova (2000)

Markova (2000)
Member Rating:
Acclaimed Filipino filmmaker Gil M. Portes directs this harrowing account of the life and times of the openly gay Walter Dempster, Jr. AKA Markova. The film opens with Markova watching a documentary of elderly "comfort women" describing their horrors at being forced into prostitution by the Japanese army. From this starting point, Markova (Dolphy) relates he was abused as a child by his bullying older brother. When he died, Markova's taste of freedom was short-lived because he himself was forced into prostitution during the Japanese occupation. When American troops liberated the Philippines, Markova's situation only improved slightly under the ultra-conservative post-war regime. This film was screened at the 2001 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

As a gay man who is interested in history I found MARKOVA very interesting. I felt the actors delivered believable performances. Just wish the DVD had some "extras" such as historical background and maybe interviews with the real Markova (he was still alive when the movie was first released). Very interesting how actors who were related (father/son/grandson) were used to portray Markova as he advanced in age.

It is interesting to know the plight of the gay man during WW II settings on a conservative catholic dominant country - Philippines conflicted by the Japanese occupation. Most of the time, movies don't dwell seriously on gay plots. I find this movie naked - in the sense that it does not have all the glitters, actions, effects that we always wanted to see - but It's nakedness gave us the avenue to see other facets of life - how other gender felt when we feel differently. This is what i call THE REALM OF REALITY.

Not a waste of time....if your in to history and can follow it. But if your looking for excitement, and a plot, then don't get this one. It was an interesting movie, for historical interest...not for a movie. If your into history 4 stars... Big X for great movie watching.
