Dead or Alive 2: The Birds (2000)
Member Rating:
In spite of its title, this film bares no direct relation to Takashi Miike's rip-roarin' Dead or Alive, which is not surprising since ended with world going up in flames in the last installment. This film opens with Mizuki (Sho Aikawa), who is hired by an eccentric magic enthusiast (Tsukamoto Shinya) to off a yakuza crime lord, only to have his target wasted by a rival mobster Shuichi (Riki Takeuchi). It turns out that the two are long-lost childhood friends who grew up in an orphanage in a remote island in the Inland sea. After the crime, they find themselves drawn back to their childhood haunt. There they reconnect with another friend, Kohei (Kenichi Endo), who ended up not a hired gun, but a modest fisherman who also runs the orphanage. After giving a hilarious performance for a room full of kids, Mizuki and Shuichi decide to leave the island and to work together as hitmen. This time, however, they're killing to make a difference -- figuring that with each scumbag they ice they can save ten children when they donate their proceeds to charity. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

This movie was very confusing and hard to follow especially with subtitles but it was very unique in a good way. The story line was not bad but the camera work was pretty terrible for a year 2000 movie especially with japan producing it. You would figure they would have awesome technology to use on it

Ok. I have watched all three parts of this series and this installment is pretty boring and unnecessary. The first installment was ok but not important. The third installment was pretty awesome and stands on it's own if you didn't see the first two. Sadly, I would have to advise skipping this one. Not much action. Story is a bit disjointed, confusing and longwinded. See all three if you are anal retentive about trilogies, like me. -Jerome-

I'm not surprised that this has gotten some negative reviews. We all know that Americans are incapable of liking anything remotely different from the garbage that Hollywood tosses out. Two hitmen (who are also friends from childhood) decide to kill and donate stolen money to children in need of medical aid in this film by Takashi Miike. The first part shows the initial hit that brings the two protagonists together. The second part consists mostly of character development. The third part is a series of killing engagements and a showdown with some Chinese killers. There are a lot of original, weird moments in this one - some of which misfire, but many are very entertaining. Edison Chen and Shinya Tsukamoto give classic cameos. This is even better than the original.
