Ralph Fiennes plays a grown man haunted by his childhood in David Cronenberg's stylized psychological drama Spider. Upon his release from a mental institution, Spider (Fiennes) takes up residence in a halfway house. Paranoid, quiet, and forever making notes, Spider spends much of the film remembering scenes from his youth, specifically a horrific event from his childhood that occurred after he came to believe that his father (Gabriel Byrne) was having an affair on his mother (Miranda Richardson). The psychological terror builds to a climax that challenges how much the viewer can believe Spider's recollections of the event. Bradley Hall plays Spider as a boy, and Richardson portrays many different women who come into contact with Spider. Spider was screened in competition at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

This is a stunning film with memorable performances by Fiennes and Richardson but more importantly, has a clever, well written, haunting psychological plot and script. Spider is a creepy character (and don't even try to understand his mumbling--they deliberately don't want you to be able to understand his words), but you begin to sympathise with him which is part of the art. Yes, there is a violent murder, but it's over in a flash--the rest is great tension-building suspense. Not for kids!

I agree with the reviewer Anthony. This did leave me thinking for awhile afterwards. "What in the world was that all about???" I thought. It left me confused and a little nauseous. (Just kidding about the nausea.) I think Ralph Fiennes is one of the finest dramatic actors alive today. He really throws himself headlong into a role and it shows in this film. The whole film is dark and you get a sense of the loneliness Spider must have felt all his life. I don't want to give anything away. I'll just say that if you enjoy movies that you have to really think about while you're watching it, then you will like this. If you don't, stay away.

I don't know how this movie got 3 stars from anyone. If I didn't pay close enough attention it was because the pace was so excruciatingly slow. It was a joy mailing this one back.....
