Solid actioner about a breed of warrior rarely portrayed on film: French paratroopers. Despite the stereotype about French deficit in courage, this movie shows how false that is. Quinn is charismatic, tough, and believable. Now if only "Dien Bien Phu" would be released in the states.

There are very few films made about the French occupation in Algeria so this film is a rarity plus it has a great cast: Anthony Quinn as seasoned officier, Alain Delon as a second in command and an usually cast George Segal in dark makeup as Arab-French soldier plus also include a still radiant Michelle Morgan as Quinn's lover and a very young Claudia Cardinale as Delon's girlfriend--and you have an interesting film. Mark Robson's direction is fine and the battle scenes are good. Good to hear also that the main French actors like Delon, Ronet & Morgan are not dubbed and speak in their native voices as is the Italian Cardinale (who was dubbed in "Once Upon a Time in the West")--she was quite a dish then. This may not be the most accurate representation of the book--but the great cast will pull you in.
