In this Spaghetti-western-like martial arts actioner, Texas Ranger J. J. McQuade (Chuck Norris) is up against the weapons-dealer Rawley Wilkes (David Carradine) after Wilkes kidnaps McQuade's partner and daughter and takes them to Mexico. McQuade's personal vendetta is encouraged by the government because Wilkes is hijacking U.S. arms shipments for his illicit weapons deals and the government wants him stopped. After the kidnapping incident, McQuade is assigned Kayo (Robert Beltran) a rookie patrolman, to accompany him in his fight, and he is also joined by FBI-agent Jackson (Leon Isaac Kennedy). A 10 on the Chuck Norris cheese scale. Crazy spaghetti western soundtrack from Francesco De Masi adds flavor to a modern day western with Chuck as a craggy Texas Ranger, years before his Walker stint on television. Chuck kicks butt from the opening scene and continues throughout. Uzi battles, monster trucks, evil dwarfs, mud pit makeout sessions, horse racing, karate tournaments, and lots of Pearl Beer - how could you not be entertained by a movie like that? David Carradine's argyle Gap sweater is to die for. And look for Chakotay from Star Trek Voyager in one of his early roles as the Eric Estrada stand-in.

To me "Lone Wolf McQuade" was the turning point in Chuck Norris's film career. This was the film that Chuck created the look we know today (beard and dark hair) . This also was the first in a long line of law officer roles. His roles until this were either a martial arts expert or an ex Marine. From here Chuck stayed pretty much to law type characters. "J.J. McQuade" served as the inspiration for his best known role of "Cordell Walker" on the TV Series "Walker, Texas Ranger". This film also features some young actors who went on to become TV stars themselves - notably Robert Beltrane, later to star in "Star Trek: Voyager" and William Sanderson who immortalized the country bumpkin "Larry" on 'The Bob Newhart Show'. "Kung Fu" star David Carradine plays bad guy "Rawley Wilkes" and chews up every scene he's in. Has Chuck made better action films than this? Yes. "Code of Silence" is a much better film but for me lacks the charm and humor of this.
