XX/XY (2002)
Member Rating:
A man finds himself having to decide between one of two women -- not once, but twice -- in this independent drama. In 1993, Coles (Mark Ruffalo) is a film student at Sarah Lawrence where he meets two fellow undergrads, Thea (Kathleen Robertson) and Sam (Maya Stange). Coles and Sam come together and Thea fades out of the picture. In time, Sam tires of Coles' aimlessly hedonistic attitude, and they break up. Ten years later, Coles, after a failed career in feature films, is doing animation for an advertising agency and living with his girlfriend, Claire (Petra Wright); Thea helps run a successful restaurant with her husband, Miles (David Thornton); and Sam, smarting from a bad breakup, returns to New York after several years in London. Coles runs into Sam and discovers he still has strong feelings for her, but has to decide if they're strong enough to break off his relationship with Claire. XX/XY was the first feature film from writer/director Austin Chick. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Lost interest in the first twenty minutes. Made no sense. Had no idea what was going on. I gave it another twenty minutes and it went no where fast. I finally ejected and returned this crap fast! Boooorrrrring!

I was saddened to find this is the only movie Austin Chick has directed and written so far. If and when his next movie comes out, I will see it. I was definitely frustrated to some degree at certain points in this movie, but I was drawn more and more in psychologically to the characters' feelings that by the end the final scene just blew me away. Mark Ruffalo is fun to watch on screen. Also check out You Can Count On Me.

Ugh! Filled with vacuous, self-centered, stupid characters with horrible dialogue (that is when there is some) and no story line. Indiscriminate sex and drugs, is the theme for the first 2/3 of the film (I'm sure there are porn movies with more content than this one). Mostly there are artsy film montages, cut like an MTV music video with a lot of junior film school student angles. Only the last 5 minutes, the very last scene has some content, which is so out of place from the rest of this awful movie. I wonder what the director/writers/producers were thinking to sink time/money into this one?
