Bang Rajan (2000)
Member Rating:
This historical drama from Thailand is based on one of the key historical events in that nation's history. In 1765, Siam (as Thailand was known at that time) was being invaded by Burmese troops, and only one thing stood in the way of the Burmese army seizing control of the capitol city of Ayudhaya -- the tiny village of Bang Rajan. Despite the strength of the advancing Burmese forces, the people of Bang Rajan were determined to fight back, and Taen (Chumphorn Thepphithak) leads a band of villagers who have pledged to face down the enemy. When Taen is severely wounded in an early skirmish with the Burmese, the people of Bang Rajan are forced to turn to Chan Nhatkeo (Jaran Ngamdee), a battle-hardened soldier of fortune who lives alone in the nearby wilderness. Chan Nhateko, understanding the seriousness of the situation, brings in a handful of colleagues, and with their help the people of Bang Rajan prepare to fight the larger and better equipped Burmese army to a standstill. Bang Rajan was shot on a relatively lavish budget ($1.3 million, roughly the cost of four average Thai productions), and proved to be a blockbuster attraction at home, eventually grossing $9 million to become the biggest home-grown moneymaker in the history of the Thai film industry. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Fans of relentless, and repetitive hand to hand combat scenes may find more to like in this film. I found it interesting to see what was going on in the far east in the same years ( the 1760's) that "The Last of the Mohicans" portrayed about North America. The climatic action goes over the top, and some of the characters look so much alike, that it was hard to follow their individual dramas. These brave villagers are certainly worthy of tribute, but a more fleshed out script would have helped.

This film is and attempt at many things. It is more of an educational/ cultural movie than anything else. At the end of it yu would have learn a little bit about the history of Siam. The plot moves around the village of Bang Rajan and their resistance to the Burmese conquerors. To make a long story short, the movie is virtually a bunch of fights until the final battle. Sometimes there is no contiunuity between scenes, and at times there are scenes that are unnecessary, specially in the area of love/lust, even when they are mild in content. However, I felt that there was no need for them and that they were just an attempt to make too much out of the movie. The "R" rating is due its violence, it is from beginning to end. It also has a very noble end and lesson.

a lot of this movie was fighting and blood and guts, i dont like war movies so for ME it was a hard watch. i ended up watching it in double time, but a nice lil bit of history. everyone in the movie is very attractive, all the women were smooth curvy beauties and all the men were ripped w/6 pack stomachs.
