I was thrilled to see this movie. This piece captured the creative art of dance and its emotional connection with the audience, at its conceptual stage. It also captured the execution of performance and its impact to the audience (to race relations & the infant stirrings of the civil rights movement to boot(!!) in a way I've never seen before. Absolutely brilliant.
I really enjoy this movie as I saw it when it was first released. Lynn Whitfield did a wonderful portrayal of Josephine Baker. I'd forgotten that Josephine Baker was an activist who fought for the equality of blacks but her failure to affect change sadly lead to giving up her U.S. citizenship. However, I loved her style of dress and her showmanship so I found it entertaining.. I believe Lynn Whitfield received an award for this movie and she definitely deserved it.
