    This is a pretty good Joan movie. I have seen several. Those interested should also check out the 1928 La passion de Jeanne d'Arc, in my book the definitive Joan. I agree that Bergman was spot-on in portraying the complex emotions the real Joan may have felt. It would be hard to get that quality from a younger actress.

    Just about everyone's frame of reference for Ingrid Bergman is as Humphrey Bogart's true love in Casablanca. After seeing her in Joan of Arc my thoughts as a fan of her's have expanded. She is wonderful in the role of Joan- unassuming, somewhat timid (after all she is a peasant dealing with nobles) yet forciful in her beliefs. And, of course, beautiful-altogether the kind of girl one would go to war with. The rest of the cast is strong, as well, especially Mel Ferrer as a weak and cowardly king, devoid of scruples. The only knocks I have on the film are the limitations of the script in elucidating the miltary prowess of Joan (I've read she is considered a military genius by some); and the battle scene action is underwhelming, but I don't hold that against a film made before the advent of computer wizardry.

    For it's time it was a good rendition. Everyone raved. Ingrid Bergman was so beautiful. An id4ealized story well received.
