Puccini (1953)

Puccini (1953)
Member Rating:
The life of composer Giacomo Puccini is dramatized in this attractively produced biopic. Gabriele Ferzetti plays the title character, from his student days to his still-active 80s. The script is structured in classic "persevering over the odds" fashion, with Puccini recovering from the poor reception afforded his Madame Butterfly and going on to the loftiest of professional heights. Along the way, the protagonist's life is profoundly affected by three very different women: Small-town girl Elvira (Marta Toren), opera-diva Cesira Ferrari (Nadia Gray) and a tragic servant girl (Miriam Bru). Ample screen time is given over to full-blooded performances of Puccini's best works. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Misses - and made worse by poor quality of the transfer to dvd. Music sparkles not.

There is one truly beautiful sequence in this movie: the floating funeral of the housemaid after her suicide, with boatloads of mourners on the lake. There are no words, but the "Humming Chorus" plays throughout to great effect. The rest of the movie seems tacked onto this highlight. The composer whom many called "feline" becomes a storming lover boy whose film romance bears little resemblance to Puccini's own life. To its credit, the movie admits to being a "free and poetic" treatment of the maestro's life -- so we are clearly forewarned. There were far too few scenes of performances of Puccini's operas, because the melodrama takes front stage all too often. In this DVD, it seemed that the film reels had been switched, because the timeline of Puccini's life was jumbled without apparent flashbacking.
