Big and Hairy (1998)

Big and Hairy (1998)
Member Rating:
Newly arrived in the town of Cedar Island, perennial misfit Picasso Dewlap (Robert Burke) has trouble making friends, even when he joins his junior-high basketball team. But Picasso's stock with his peers rises considerably when he recruits a rather hirsute young "man" with remarkable hoop skills to play on the team. It so happens that Picasso's pal, Ed Tibbetts (Trevor Jones), is actually a Sasquatch, or "Bigfoot"--but that hardly matters so long as the team keeps racking up wins. Eventually growing homesick for his family back in the woods, Ed escapes on the eve of the championship game--forcing Picasso to make a fateful decision. Adapted by Brian Daly from his own novel, the made-for-cable Big & Hairy originally aired November 30, 1998, on the Showtime network. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I would not necessarily recommend this, it was very silly. Although family ties and putting yourself last are emphasized, it will probably not be serious enough for the ones who will understand it, to also be entertained by it. I say, rent at your own risk. :o)

This movie is terrible, although the idea of a basketball playing Bigfoot is somewhat an original idea, it lacks depth. For example, when Bigfoot encounters the family, it looks like a retarted person who is trying to find himself, (that is, not offending those who are retarted or autistic), and portrays a part of humanity that no one can relate to. Besides, why would anyone want to see a mythical-retarted creature play basketball and constantly makes grunting sounds to speak: "Hrrrrr!" (or "GOO-GOO-GAH-GAH"). No one really wants to hear that throughout an entire movie-especially children who don't even know what the word "myth" means. Over all, this movie copies/resembles that basketball playing dog movie, it also makes the main character, Bigfoot, resemble a retarted autistic person, whose basketball skills make up for his autistic nature, and creates an over affect to feel sympathy rather than excitement for the dumb beast.
