Relax ... It's Just Sex (1998)
Member Rating:
Tara (Jennifer Tilly) hosts a dinner party. When she discusses the HIV-positive results of her lover's brother, others join in with their opinions on AIDS. Black artist Buzz (T.C. Carson), brought to the party as the date of Vincey (Mitchell Anderson), quickly becomes a twosome with Javi (Eddie Garcia). Megan (Serena Scott Thomas) breaks up with her black lover Sarina (Cynda Williams) after Megan reveals her affair with Sarina's cousin Jered (Billy Wirth). With lesbian, gay, and straight interactions throughout, the film's framework leans toward Schnitzler's La Ronde (1900), as an assortment of characters talk directly into the camera to introduce other characters. Shown at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

Super slow beginning. Rather strange look at the gay world but, decent message overall.

Do you like HIV/AIDS soap dramas? I don't. I wasn't expecting it to be like this. Out of a group of lesbian, gay, and straight "friends", one of them comes forward to say he has HIV. Then the group erupts into arguements about what HIV is, does HIV lead to AIDS, is there a government conspiracy, do HIV/AIDS drugs help or kill, etc. etc. etc. Wow, what a riveting and lovely story. How entertaining. Not! But maybe this is your cup of tea...it's just not for me. The acting was okay. There is a lot of fighting and arguing. You get a chance to see varieties of sex: lesbian, gay, straight...no surprise, given the title. I rented it, and would not consider buying it. We were unable to watch the entire flick, because we found the subject matter and arguing annoying and boring. Who knows, maybe halfway through the movie you'll also be asking yourself, "What's the point?"
