Class Trip (1998)
Member Rating:
Claude Miller directed this French psychological drama adapted from Emmanuel Carrere's 1995 novel (based on a factual news item). Detailing a troubled boy's traumas at a holiday camp, the film recalls Miller's other adolescent dramas -- The Little Thief, The Best Way to Walk (also at a holiday camp), and An Impudent Girl. When young Nicolas (Clement Van Den Bergh) is set to go on a school ski trip, his father (Francois Roy) has safety concerns because of a recent bus accident. Instead of allowing Nicolas to join his classmates on the bus, he chooses to drive the youth to the camp, upping the boy's anxiety level. At the remote camp, Nicolas forgets to take his bag from the car, bringing more fears to the surface. He becomes friends with an undisciplined boy, Hodkann (Lokman Nalcakan), who lends him pajamas. The film dramatizes Nicolas' visions as he describes his dreams and nightmares to Hodkann. Shown in competition at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

A good movie but at times it is hard to tell when Nicolas is dreaming or in reality. There was little background on Nicolas to show why he was a dreamer but it all makes sense in the end.

Class trip portrays an emotionally scarred boy named Nicolas played by Clément ven den Bergh. The director, Claude Miller, structures this film within the consciousness of this fretful and distressed pre-adolescent. The director, in an effort to explore the psyche of this moody young outcast, conjures up a sometimes confusing mixture of fantasy, reality, dreams and fabrications. More than one of the fantasies and dream sequences seemed a might bit overdone. The relevant cast is small (another boy, two teachers and the father) and all do well enough in their roles but the father’s depiction by the director left me feeling perplexed as to his supposed significance in his son’s life. I felt the film was sometimes sensitive and elegant but at other times it becomes too enigmatic with an ending somewhat too subtle.
