Mike Leigh's first film after his international success Secrets and Lies was this comedy-drama about two former college roommates spending a weekend together -- the first time they've seen each other in six years. As teenagers, Annie (Lynda Steadman) was painfully shy, terribly nervous (so much so that it manifested itself in a severe facial rash) and in desperate need of self-esteem. Hannah (Katrin Cartlidge), on the other hand, had strong opinions about everything and a habit of blurting them out regardless of the hurt they would inflict upon others. Years later, Annie has gained a certain confidence and poise (and her face has cleared up), but she's yet to learn how to relax, while Hannah is still incapable of letting a quiet moment speak for itself. As they spend the weekend hunting for apartments (Annie's looking for a new place to live), they're constantly reminded of their past together -- how far they've come, and how far they still have to go. Marianne Jean-Baptiste, who won acclaim for her role as the daughter given up for adoption in Secrets and Lies, co-wrote the musical score for this film. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

If you've ever reunited with an old friend or at least thought about it. Then check out this movie. It relives the 80's through these two women during college. And then the not-so-far -formerly-present of the the late 90's where they are living their own but separate job-oriented lives as adults. It has both its funny moments and it painful ones. But all in all, at the end of this tunnel, there is a light. And it shines brightly for these two ladies and their friendship; almost like sisters who've found each other again. And I must say that I am somewhat biased in my opinion (being a Mike Leigh fan) because of the extraordinary acting talents of the late Katrin Cartlidge (who plays Hannah in the film). Also check her out in "From Hell" (with Johnny Depp), and "Naked" (with David Thewliss).

Every Mike Leigh film is a gift from on high and we are blessed to have him. This one is subtle and understated and as usual Leigh extracts luminous performances from his brilliant cast. Cartlidge and Steadman are tremendous in the leads and Mark Benton is scintillating as Ricky. You might need subtitles.

I am generally a fan of Mike Leigh's films but I found the 2 lead characters in this one to be more caricatures than believable people. Or perhaps just people with whom I would not want to spend a great deal of time.
