This hour-long series -- which was loosely inspired by Seven Brides for Seven Brothers -- ran for two seasons on ABC at the end of the 1960s. It was a bit unusual in its time, combining a period setting (circa 1865) with stories that mixed romantic comedy and drama. The series ran in syndication for about a decade after it was canceled, mostly on the strength of the casting of Bobby Sherman (a teen singing idol of the late '60s and early '70s) in a leading role. It hasn't been seen since the 1970s, and so this triple DVD set will probably appeal to fans who remember it. The new film-to-video transfers look sensational, and the sound is nearly a match for the clarity and richness of the full-frame (1.33:1) image. The show holds up surprisingly well, with some amazingly contemporary issues explored -- mostly surrounding prejudice and women's right and priorities -- in the context of the period setting. For older viewers, it will be a blast seeing Sherman and co-star Bridget Hanley (who, for a time, was one of the prettiest women on series television) again after so many years; they were on the cover of seemingly every teen magazine of the period, as their characters were linked romantically, and viewing this show will bring back to mind a much more innocent era, in which a series like this could be pushed without anything suggestive or risqui in the coverage of the two stars. As to the particulars of the set, the 26 episodes have been spread among six single-sided discs, offered two at a time in slim cases within a larger slipcase, and each episode has been given a generous nine chapters that coincide with the breaks in the hour-long (actually, about 52-minute) shows. There are no extras to speak of, but considering how the series has all but disappeared from distribution, that shouldn't matter too much to anyone who would be inclined to buy it, a list that would include not only Bobby Sherman fans but also Trekkies -- thanks to the presence of Mark Lenard in a leading role -- and fans of 1930s screen siren Joan Blondell, who had a very prominent role. ~ Bruce Eder, All Movie Guide
